Laughing Stock is a farce about an amateur theatre company that attempts to perform both Dracula and Hamlet, both of which go wrong in hilarious ways. When I was designing the advertising for this show, I wanted to play off of the audience's preconceptions about the serious tone of these shows. It seemed obvious to incorporate the iconic hand with the skull from Hamlet into the design. In order to turn the serious tone of Hamlet on its head, I chose to make the skull be laughing. For the style of the poster, I was inspired by the fun, off-kilter illustration style of classic poster artist Saul Bass. This consisted of chunky, angular lines and graphic typography.
